Fundraiser for specialist dementia care

A woman who lost her husband to Alzheimer’s is campaigning for a specialist nurse to care for dementia sufferers and their families.

Sheila Wainwright, who cared for her husband John up until his death, has organised a fundraising night as part of a campaign for an Admiral Nurse for Wakefield.

Mrs Wainwright saw her husband become scared and confused as his illness worsened, and says she struggled to get enough help caring for him.

There are currently no Admiral Nurses, who specialise in dementia care and looking after carers of people suffering from the condition, in the district.

The black tie event will be at the Queens Hotel in Leeds on Saturday, March 9.

Mrs Wainwright said: “MacMillan Nurses are nationally known for supporting cancer sufferers and their carers.

“Admiral nurses have the same cause and the same passion for giving professional advice and support to carers of dementia.”

Businesses are invited to sponsor a table at the fundraiser, which will be hosted by the BBC’s Harry Gration and feature author Gervaise Phinn.

An auction will be held on the night, with prizes including a box at Leeds Grand Theatre, a private box at York Races, a track day driving a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Aston Martin and a five-star spa weekend at York’s Cedar Court Grand Hotel.
