Future of Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust still uncertain

TALKS were continuing this week over the future of the debt-ridden trust which runs Pinderfields Hospital.

In July, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust admitted it could not balance its books in order meet a government deadline to achieve elite Foundation Trust status by 2014.

Government minsters had issued a warning that trusts which fail to do so face being broken up or taken over.

Bosses at Mid Yorkshire could not confirm plans for the trust’s long-term future this week, but Stephen Eames, Mid Yorkshire’s interim chief executive, said NHS bosses had agreed that the trust’s current leadership would remain in place.

He said: “This demonstrates that the leadership team and our staff are doing the right things to tackle the issues facing the Trust.

“Together we are building confidence in our ability to develop the right solution for local services and local communities.”

Mr Eames said discussions were ongoing with other NHS providers to develop partnerships to deliver future services.

He added: “We will continue to work with the NHS locally and with other representatives from across Mid Yorkshire to determine the best way forward for this organisation.”

Mid Yorkshire is facing major reorganisation to tackle a deficit expected to reach £26m at the end of the year, and has been consulting on controversial plans to cut jobs and downgrade the salaries of some staff to save money.

It is among cash-strapped trusts to be overseen by a new body called the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA).

Rob Checketts, the TDA’s director of communications, said: “The trust faces some very challenging issues, and we will continue to work with the leadership team as they look to deliver high quality services that are sustainable in the future.”
