Gala gets a workout as crowds flock into town

LIVE music and stunning dance routines drew crowds to Ossett Gala at the weekend.

The summer festival, which raises money for local charities, was held in the town’s precinct.

There were live appearances from the Silver Leaf Jazz Band, Horbury Victoria Band and Wakefield Orchestral Wind, compered by local DJ Andy Lloyd.

And dance performances from the Westgate Cheerleaders, Spice Colour Guard and Phoenix All Stars Majorettes kept the crowds entertained.

Graham Willis, from Ossett Gala Committee, said: “It was another successful gala and very well attended. The weather held out for us and we were pleased to see so many people there.”

He thanked committee members John and Rachel McKail, who did much of the organising.

The event was attended by Mary Creagh MP, who backed Ossett Civic Trust in its campaign to promote town centre trade by selling limited edition shopping bags.

The bags, which bear the words, ‘We’re Ossett Shoppers’, and depict a cartoon of a local couple out shopping, were popular at the gala.

Ms Creagh said: “It was great to see so many people having a fun day out with their family at Ossett Gala. There was a huge range of local organisations present which shows the strength of community spirit in the town.

“I fully support the civic trust’s campaign to boost trade in the town.”

A colourful flower show took centre stage in the town hall, as Wakefield Geranium and Fuchsia Society held its annual contest at the gala for the third year running.

The show featured 40 classes of flowers and was judged by Alan Taylor, of Rotherham.

Show organiser David Steele said: “Once again we are grateful to Ossett Gala Committee’s generous support in assisting us to stage our 32nd annual show in the town hall.”
