'Get rid of town hall recycle bins'
A councillor has called for newly renovated recycling bins next to the town hall to be scrapped.
Separate bins for paper, glass, cans, plastics, clothes and shoes were recently replaced and streamlined to make way for one bin for glass, cans and plastics, another for paper and another for clothes and shoes.
And Wakefield Council chiefs said the removal of bins will allow for more car parking spaces.
Coun Elizabeth Knowles said that although the changes have improved the look of the area, she would like to see the bins removed completely.
She said: "We have a kerbside collection system, and if people don't think it is working then they should speak up.
"Residents don't need these bins, and they are eyesores. I believe the vast majority of people using them are retailers and people from outside the town."
But Glynn Humphries, Wakefield Council's service director for Cleaner and Greener, said the Ossett bins recycle around 100 tonnes of material each year making it the sixth busiest recycling site in the district.
He said: "There is a clear public demand for these facilities and we haven't received any complaints from citizens about the area in the last three years.
"Wakefield Council is fully committed to helping people recycle because we know it is important to our citizens. Recycling helps our environment, and reduces the amount of natural resources that we use as well as reducing the amount of waste we have to send to landfill."
