Golden day for dancing couple

A MUSIC-LOVING couple who met on the dance floor will celebrate 50 years of happy marriage tomorrow.

Audrey and Frank Dykes, of Malham Square, Eastmoor, are celebrating their golden wedding with their three children and three grandchildren.

The couple met at a dance about a year before they married at St Andrew’s Church, on Peterson Road, in 1959.

Mrs Dykes said: “We were already slightly acquainted before, but got to know each other at the dance. It was handy because we all lived in the same area, so he could walk me home.

“The day we got married was absolutely freezing. It was very cold and snowy but we had a wonderful day.”

Mrs Dykes worked in an office until the couple had their three children, Lorraine, Stephen and Anne. After they had grown, she went back to work at Thurston’s bakery, in the city centre, where she remained for 14 years.

Mr Dykes, 77, worked as a pipe-fitter before he retired.

Mrs Dykes said: “We have a lot of similar hobbies, we have always enjoyed music. We like to listen to big band music. We also like gardening and reading.

“I think the secret to a long, successful marriage is to never have any secrets, especially about money because that is always likely to cause problems. I think a good sense of humour is important and never go to sleep on an argument.

“We will take the actual day of the anniversary as it comes. All the family will be coming round and I’m sure it will turn into a party.”
