Graffiti artists turned bridge into canvas

Urban artists from all corners of the country travelled to Horbury to help turn a bridge into a colourful canvas.

More than 20 graffiti artists took part in Artistic Creation UK’s event last weekend.

After getting permission from Wakefield Council, they gave the bridge, on Green Lane, Horbury Junction, an urban art make-over.

The event was organised by 34-year-old Martin Hayhurst, of Newmillerdam.

He said: “The bridge is on a cycle route so we wanted to reflect that in the graffiti that was created.

“We also put lots of funky little characters in there for the younger kids to see.

“We had people come from as far as London and Newcastle to take part. And people came down to see what were doing. There was a great atmosphere.”

The project was funded by the artists who spent around £1,500 on spray paint alone.

Mr Hayhurst said: “It took more than 12 months of e-mails, presentations and meetings with Wakefield Council before they agreed to let us do this.

“They were very sceptical at first but we kept pushing it. There aren’t many places in the UK where you can do this kind of thing, but the bridge was ideal.

“We have had such a wicked response from people from all walks life, from younger kids to the older generations.

“The feedback I have had is that everybody is talking about it and everyone has been really positive about it.”

After the success of this project, Mr Hayhurst is now planning a bigger art project later in the year. But it will depend on the long-term impact of the art.

He said: “We spent a lot of time, money and effort. We don’t want to have done that for someone to go and vandalise it.

“So, we’re going to see how things go and if it’s still intact in summer then we’ll do something bigger.”
