Green light for college revamp

EXCITING plans for the £25m redevelopment of Wakefield College’s city centre campus were given the go-ahead this week.
The college missed out on funding from the Learning and Skills Council for a £75m new build in July 2009.
But the Express revealed details of its ‘plan B’ in November, which will see the Margaret Street campus transformed.
On Wednesday, college principal Sam Wright said: “We are delighted our plans have been rubber-stamped and now we can start work on providing a world-class learning facility in the heart of the city.”
She said the plans will enable the college to deliver education to a wide range of learners including general further education learners, sixth form students, higher education students and adults.
Phase one of the project will see the existing B Block redeveloped to include a pedestrianised walk-through connecting Newstead Road to Bond Street. It will house higher education and sixth form students, as well as a learning resource centre.
The new development will also include disabled parking, a safe drop-off point, cafe terrace, seating areas, cycle stands, and landscaping with trees and planted areas.
The different phases of the development will go ahead as and when finances are available. Some of it will be funded from the sale of the Thornes Park campus, which will eventually become redundant.
The rest of the money will come from the college’s reserves and from bank loans.
