Hats off to charity effort for hospice
A giant chocolate egg was raffled off as care home residents raised nearly £500 for Wakefield Hospice.
Elderly residents and staff at Croftlands Sheltered Housing, on New Street, raised 100 for the big egg, and set up craft stalls to reel in extra funds.
Family and friends helped out by donating seasonal gifts to sell on the stalls.
And former florist Silvia Race, 84, used her know-how and special contacts to make a range of unique Easter bonnets for fellow residents to wear.
She said: "I've really enjoyed making little Easter crafts for the stall. I still know people who work in local florists and I asked them to help out by providing some items for our party.
"It has been a fabulous day. Being here at Croftlands and being able to get involved in activities like this has really given me a new lease of life."
Felicity Peace MBE, former headteacher at Holy Trinity CE Primary School, and Coun Elizabeth Knowles were among the judges of an Easter bonnet competition.
Coun Knowles said: "There were some brilliant entries, and Sylvia really went the extra mile with her efforts.
"Everyone really enjoyed themselves and it was nice to see so much money raised."
Hospice fundraiser Terry Rigg said: "This is a wonderful amount of money and we really appreciate the effort these residents have put in to raise it."
Sandra Stephenson, Wakefield and District Housing scheme manager, said: "The residents have been fantastic – they really got into the Easter spirit and contributed to a great event.
"We'd like to thank the friends and families of the residents, and the scheme employees too, as some of them came in on their day off to help out."
