Highest honour for Sir Rodney

SIR Rodney Walker will be given the Freedom of the City for his services to sport, business and charity.
Sir Rodney, 69, led a campaign to reopen the Theatre Royal and Opera House in 1986 and has helped to raise millions for charity.
He was chairman of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats from 1986 to 1993 and has recently spearheaded the club’s attempts to secure a new stadium as chairman of the Wakefield and District Community Stadium Trust.
He will be presented with the honour by Wakefield Council on Wednesday at a meeting in County Hall.
BBC news presenter and personal friend Harry Gration and Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, will attend and pay tribute to the former Thornes House Grammar School pupil.
Council leader coun Peter Box said: “I feel it is only right that Sir Rodney’s tireless work as an ambassador for Wakefield should also be recognised in the highest honour the council can confer – that of Freedom of the City.
“Sir Rodney has played a huge role in many aspects of life in the district – in rugby league, in business, in the arts and through raising millions of pounds for charity and good causes.”
Recent recipients of the Freedom of the City have included the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, The Rifles, and rugby league legend Neil Fox.
