Historic Clayton Hospital to close

Clayton Hospital

Clayton Hospital

A HISTORIC hospital built through the kindness of a city philanthropist in the 1800s is set to be closed down and sold.

Clayton Hospital, on Northgate, was opened after former mayor Thomas Clayton donated buildings to the Wakefield General Dispensary, an organisation set up to provide healthcare for the poor, in 1854.

It provided much needed healthcare for the city long before the NHS was formed.

More than 150 years on, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, which now owns the site, is closing it down.

Specialist eye services have moved from Clayton to Pinderfields Hospital and its sexual health services will be based at King Street Walk-in Centre.

Brian Dudding, head of estates at Mid Yorkshire, said services were being moved into more modern facilities which were better for patients.

He said: “We recognise that Clayton Hospital has been a prominent feature in Wakefield since the late 19th century. Many local people will have memories of being treated there and many staff, past and present will fondly remember working there.

“We move forward while recognising the part that Clayton has played for over a hundred years.”
