Historical artefacts of Clarke Hall to be given safe homes

HISTORICAL artefacts from Clarke Hall will be given a new lease of life.
The 17th century living museum on Aberford Road was closed last year after its main source of funding was cut.
It’s owners Wakefield Council announced it would have to sell the gentleman farmer’s house after no-one came forward to rescue it.
But furniture, musical instruments and other artefacts have been found new homes at museums and visitors centres around the country.
Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Service Director for Sport and Culture, said: “Most of the smaller items from Clarke Hall are going to be used as part of our education handling collection for school sessions across all our museum sites, including at the new museum in Wakefield One where a small number of these objects are already on temporary display.
“Larger pieces of furniture and other items are being returned to the main collections store for safe keeping and some may be used in future temporary exhibitions, whilst others may be offered on temporary loan to other local museum services.
“We are preparing Clarke Hall for sale but as this is a property of significant historical interest this is a complex process and will take some time.”
The Friends of Clarke Hall have sold items owned by the group to raise cash for charities.
Artefacts including furniture, musical instruments and 17th century household items have been sold to museums and historical groups.
The money made will be divided between hospices in Wakefield, Leeds and Kirklees as well as Colne Valley Museum, in Huddersfield.
Due to the sale of the hall, the Friends have been forced to wind down the group.
This week, they announced the last meeting will be held in March.
