Horbury Festival Needs Help

A LAST-minute hitch has thrown an all-day music festival in aid of Cancer Research into chaos.

Live At The Mills has been organised by Gary Smith after his musician friend, Simon Walker, contracted a rare form of cancer

Mr Smith, of Hostingley Lane, said: "Simon lost both his legs and he struggled to find music studios that could accommodate him because he was in a wheelchair so we built the facilities he needed down at Addingford Mills.

"Unfortunately Simon had a lot of trials and tribulations but Cancer Research UK gave us so much support so we wanted to do something to give them something back.

"Simon was gobsmacked when we told him what we were doing. He's got another operation a fortnight after the festival so this is putting a smile on his face and helping him get through."

But the fundraising festival could be in jeopardy after the company supplying crowd barriers and fencing after the original firm went bust.

And Mr Smith is struggling to find a replacement so the event at Addingford Mill, in Horbury Junction can go ahead next Sunday.

He said: "If we don't get the barriers and fencing we need it will cause a logistical nightmare and we will struggle.

"The barriers and fencing provide extra security around the equipment. We might still be able to ahead but it wouldn't be good."

Mr Walker, 22, from Dewsbury, and his band Secret In Today will be performing at the event.

They will be joined on the bill by The Dharma, Midnight Rising and Distorted Miles.

Jugglers, magicians and World Wrestling Entertainment stars including Kevin Thorne will also be entertaining the crowds at the first event of its kind.

Mr Smith said the Addingford Mills studio was a not-for-profit organisation that gave opportunities to young people and people who did not have the opportunity to use this type of recording equipment.

He said: "We're only charging people 1 to get in, and 50p for kids because we want it to be something that all families can afford to do. It won't just be a one-off either, as we're hoping to hold more events after this one."

Anyone who can help should contact Mr Smith on 0785 2423618.
