Horbury fundraiser reaches new heights
ONE man and his dog climbed the 25 highest peaks in the Lake District in just six days to raise cash for fellow asthma sufferers.
Dean Lomas, of Grove Road, and his German Pointer Charlie walked a total of 93 miles to raise 1,800.
His trek included England's highest mountain Scafell Pike, as well as Helvellyn, Skiddaw and Pillar.
Mr Lomas, 33, said: "I've got asthma myself and Asthma UK is a charity which is close to my lungs as well as my heart.
"A couple of years ago I did the national Three Peak Challenge for Wakefield Hospice, then I saw a list of the 25 highest peaks on the internet and I thought I'd love to cross them all at once.
"It was definitely hard going especially because I was doing it one day after another. If one day had been difficult I had to get up the next morning and carry on."
The father of two camped out for two nights on the hills during his expedition which started on Monday, August 3 and finished on Saturday, August 8.
He said: "My dog Charlie kept me up at night. He wanted to either get in my sleeping bag, or run off to chase sheep.
"He's 11 years old this year but he still managed to keep going.
"My wife Ruth thinks I'm a bit of a nutcase but she did join me on the last day which really helped."
He trained for his adventure by climbing hills in Netherton and Huddersfield as well as working out at the gym.
Mr Lomas has been married to Ruth for six years they have two sons, two-and-a-half year old Chester and Milo, who is 15 months old.
