The scandal of horse meat being found in food products labelled as beef has spread to West Yorkshire after a slaughterhouse was raided.

Police and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) raided Peter Boddy Licensed Slaughterhouse in Todmorden yesterday as part of an investigation into the alleged mislabelling of meat products.

The FSA said it believed the slaughterhouse supplied horse carcasses to meat processing plant Farmbox Meats Ltd in Aberystwyth, Wales, which was also raided. The owners of both companies deny any wrongdoing.

The FSA said that along with the police, it was looking into the circumstances through which meat products purporting to be beef for kebabs and burgers were sold when they were in fact horse.

Operations at both plants have been suspended, and the FSA has detained all meat found and seized paperwork from the two companies.

Andrew Rhodes, the FSA’s director of operations, said: “I ordered an audit of all horse producing abattoirs in the UK after this issue first arose last month and I was shocked to uncover what appears to be a blatant misleading of consumers.

“I have suspended both plants immediately while our investigations continue.”
