TWO horses died after they were hit by a car on the M1 motorway.
Police were called after six horses escaped from a near by field and got onto the slip road of the southbound carriageway at junction 39 at about 5.30am on Saturday .
One of the animals died at the scene and another had to be put down after sustaining serious injuries after being hit by a Vauxhall Corsa.
The other horses were returned to the field safely.
The driver of the Corsa was not injured and the motorway was closed for a short time.
