Idea is right up traders' street

NORMANTON'S proud shopkeepers have come out in force to back the Wakefield Express Help Your High Street campaign.

The High Street has been at the heart of the community for well over 100 years and we want to ensure that it stays that way.

In 2005 Normanton was named in the top ten towns with the most local identity, mainly due to its traditional shopping street, and that has not changed – many of the shops on the High Street have remained in the same families for generations.

Our campaign will encourage townsfolk to shop local and keep our businesses thriving.

June Gildman, treasurer of Normanton Chamber of Trade and proprietor of Jags of Normanton, on High Street, said: “We have got everything in Normanton you could possibly need.

“There is so much quality here, everybody should support Help Your High Street and shop locally.”

Linda Greatorex, who has a hairdressing salon on High Street said: “Nobody wants to see our shops fall empty, that’s why it is so important that everybody gets behind the campaign.”

Normanton Mayor Mike Burch echoed the traders’ comments.

He said: “The High Street is the heart of the community, not just for shopping but for people meeting and chatting.

“It’s fantastic that the Express is encouraging Normanton people to help the town thrive.”

Leader of Normanton Town Council, Coun Barry Smith said: “It is extremely important that we shop locally.

“Normanton seems to have kept its traditional charm and a lot of the shops are run by local people. We should support them to keep the town viable.”

Wakefield Council leader Coun Peter Box said: “We should be trying to support local business and the district’s markets in anyway we can so they can continue to thrive.

“They create local jobs, provide a high level of service and offer very good products and produce.”

The council’s chief executive Joanne Roney said: “We need to all back local businesses, especially in the current economic climate.

“Shopping in your local town can save you money and help to keep small businesses open.

“They are the backbone of our communities which help preserve the unique character of towns while encouraging a feeling of belonging and keeping community spirit alive for generations to come.”
