Inquest questions Wakefield care home's standards after resident's death
STANDARDS at a Wakefield care home were questioned in an inquest into the death of an elderly man who developed an infected ulcer.
Stanley Whittles, 81, of Manor Road, Ossett, died at Pinderfields hospital in October 2006 after being a resident at Earls Lodge care home, Eastmoor.
The official cause of his death was pneumonia and dementia.
But an inquest in Wakefield heard that staff should have intervened earlier after he developed a pressure ulcer which became so infected it stank of rotting flesh.
Today (Friday) West Yorkshire coroner David Hinchliffe recorded a narrative verdict which said the care home was unable to adequately deal with the ulcer, which contributed to Mr Whittles' death.
