THE man headlining the city’s first literature festival says he hopes the event will inspire future wordsmiths.

International poet and writer Simon Armitage will be one of the main attractions during Wakefield Lit Fest, which starts on Saturday, September 22, and will see writing, poetry and theatre taking place across the city during nine days.

Mr Armitage of Huddersfield will read extracts from his latest book on Friday, September 28, at 8pm. He was originally due to perform at The Orangery on Back Lane, where the majority of the festival will take place. But due to popular demand, he will now be at the 200-seater Westgate Unitarian Chapel, next to the train station.

Mr Armitage said: “I think it is about time Wakefield had its own festival and I am excited to be involved.

“Language is the most powerful force in the world and I hope we can spark something among younger people. Writing and poetry is not elitist. All you need is a pen and paper and knowledge of the alphabet.”
