Investment in staff 'is key to survival'
FIRMS are being urged to retain staff by investing in skills and training despite rising job losses in the city during the recession.
After the latest figures showed unemployment doubled in the past 12 months, training provider City and Guilds has told Wakefield firms they may only survive the downturn by investing in staff.
The organisation has called on firms to attend a free conference in June, when expert advice on funding for training, boosting morale and retaining staff will be given.
Joe Bell, customer relationship manager for City and Guilds at Wakefield's Paragon Business Park, said: "I think there is a misconception that the training budget is something that is expendable, and it is the first thing that can be cut.
"In reality, if you invest in training you make sure you have the quality of staff and that will help companies through the recession.
"Across all industries, it is of great importance to invest in skills."
Professor Richard Field OBE, chairman of Field Enterprise Ltd, will be the keynote speaker at the Developing Your Business for the Future conference at Leeds Carnegie Stadium on Thursday, June 18.
Featured speakers will include Ruth Adams, assistant director of skills and economic inclusion for Yorkshire Forward, and Clive Howarth, skills development director for the Learning and Skills Council.
