Jobs go at JJB’s city centre store

STAFF were laid off at Wakefield’s branch of JJB Sports this week after the company went bust.

The store at Westgate Retail Park was closed on Monday and 23 employees made redundant after the company called in the administrators.

The company announced last week it was in discussions to sell parts of the business after a slump in sales.

On Monday, administrators firm KPMG said it had sold 20 of JJB’s stores to rival retailer Sports Direct, saving around 550 jobs.

But the Wakefield shop was among 133 stores which closed with the loss of around 2,200 jobs UK-wide.

Richard Fleming, UK Head of Restructuring at KPMG, said: “Unfortunately a buyer could only be found for 20 stores on a going concern basis.

All staff made redundant as a result of store closures have had their arrears of wages and holiday entitlements paid in full.

“Our team of employment specialists will be supporting staff on completing redundancy forms and putting them in touch with job seeker services.

Last week, more than 100 people were made redundant after Normanton-based HI Group Plc went into administration.

The family-run business, on Tuscany Way, had been importing and distributing electrical white goods to the retail market for 35 years.

Administrators Ernst and Young said 109 of the 278 workforce were made redundant.

Ernst and Young said it had saved 57 jobs with the sale of the company’s Hi-Way Express Home Delivery business to North East-based electrical repair firm Pacifica Group.

It was still seeking offers on remaining parts of the business.
