Legal challenge to heart unit closure
The High Court will consider a legal challenge to a controversial decision to close a children’s heart unit in Leeds.
Campaign group Save our Surgery (SOS) has lodged a claim to overturn plans to close the unit at Leeds General Infirmary.
The group is seeking a judicial review of the plan, which would see children from Wakefield travel to Liverpool or Newcastle for heart surgery instead of Leeds.
Fears have been raised that travelling further for treatment could place some youngsters’ lives at risk.
SOS claims the consultation process behind the plan was unfair and legally flawed.
The High Court in London is due to consider the claim today and tomorrow.
