THE helicopter pilot who was killed when his aircraft flew in to a crane in London, formerly flew for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Peter Barnes, 50, was regarded as one of the most experienced aviators in the country and had more than 10,500 flying hours under his belt.

He is one of the two people killed this morning when the helicopter hit the crane on a building in central London at around 8am.

Mr Barnes, from near Reading, Berkshire, was flying an Agusta 109 eight-seater aircraft.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) said he would have flown all across West Yorkshire during his time as a pilot for them.

She added: “The Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) was saddened to hear of the tragic loss of Captain Peter Barnes earlier this morning.

“Captain Barnes had previously flown with the YAA as one of our pilots a few years ago, and was very well respected amongst our crew and staff.

“Our thoughts and sincere sympathies are with the families of all those involved in today’s tragic incident.”

Mr Barnes flew out of Leeds Bradford International Airport to reach injured people in incidents such as road accidents and take them for emergency treatment.

Starting his aviation career around 25 years ago, Captain Barnes had logged more than 10,500 flying hours and was highly regarded among his peers for his skill and professionalism.
