Lunar fun for young designers
PUPILS were over the moon to design a roller coaster project that was out of this world.
Children at Normanton Common Primary School took part in an enterprising project in the style of the BBC programme The Apprentice to design their own ‘Lunar’ theme park.
The Year 5 pupils split into teams and were given an imaginary budget of 500,000 to create the theme park.
Teacher Martin Feeley said: “This has been a great project for the children.
“Spending a whole week on such a creative project, which applies their learning to a real-life problem makes it more purposeful and meaningful. I am seeing children act and respond with such enthusiasm to some very challenging work.”
The project was designed to develop the pupils enterprise skills, including problem solving, teamwork, presentation and leadership skills.
Headteacher Glyn Bishop said: “The opportunity for us to plan exciting projects such as this has grown in the last year, and we intend to do lots more in the future.
“Our links to Freeston Business and Enterprise College have encouraged us to consider how we can link enterprise education objectives into our themes in school.
“Projects such as this and our Dragon’s Den project planned for later in the term gives our pupils a unique opportunity to apply their learning to the outside world.”
