Meeting tonight on planned changes at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust
Pinderfields Hospital general view
A £38m plan to change the way district hospital services are organised will be discussed at a public meeting at Wakefield Town Hall tonight.
The meeting is part of a consultation on plans to make Pinderfields Hospital the main A&E department at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, with critically-ill and injured patients shifted to Wakefield from Dewsbury.
Dewsbury and Pontefract would have urgent care centres treating minor ailments under the plan, while Pinderfields would keep its consultant-led A&E and treat more emergencies.
Dewsbury would also lose its consultant-led maternity unit.
The reorganisation would reduce the number of beds at Mid Yorkshire by 200 and save millions of pounds at the trust, which faces a £26m deficit at the end of the financial year.
But trust bosses insist the plan is not driven by cost savings, saying it would improve services and save lives.
The meeting will start at 7pm tonight.
