Mine shaft now an animal water hole
THIRSTY animals have a new watering hole to sample thanks to a pioneering and multi-awarding park group.
The Friends of Haw Park Wood have restored a 19th century mining shaft which is known as Fox Hole.
And they are celebrating for another reason – after winning the Green Flag Award for the fourth year in a row.
John Bolton, group secretary, said: "Fox Hole is a 19th century well. There were some small houses which were believed to be miners' cottages near by and there was a shaft which belonged to Sharlston Colliery.
"Animals can now come and water and a seat has been put there so people can rest and see what it used to look like."
The group have applied for cash grants to put notice boards up explaining the history and heritage of the wood which is near to Anglers Country Park, to visitors.
The Friends of Haw Park Wood was the first group of its kind to be formed in Wakefield in 2006.
Mr Bolton said: "We set up to be an educational group which could provide activities and facilities for family members of all ages."
Since then they have organised teddy bears picnics, installed a pixie garden for children and build bird boxes.
The Green Flag Award is a national scheme which is designed to recognise and reward the best parks in the country.
The Friends of Haw Park Wood won their first award in 2007 and have won every year since.
Mr Bolton said: "To win four awards in a row is a great credit to the work of the Friends group.
"And we hope to carry on the success for many years to come."
Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme manager, said: "We are delighted that Haw Park has won the award for four years in a row.
"This is down to the dedication of all of those involved in ensuring that the site once again has met the high standards of the Green Flag Award scheme."
