Mobo nominated rapper Wretch 32 chooses Wakefield’s Own Character clothing brand

Charles Nhemachena started designing clothes in his bedroom and now runs the Own Character shop near the market on Union Street in Wakefield.

A fashion designer who started a business in his bedroom has spotted celebrities wearing his latest designs.

Charles Nhemachena sells T-shirts, sweaters and accessories with the Own Character brand both online and from his shop on Union Street.

And his work has caught the eye of chart-topping rapper Wretch 32, who was nominated for Mobo Awards in 2011.

Mr Nhemachena, who lives in Stanley, said he’s also had orders from Joey Essex and other popular figures.

He said: “Having stars like Wretch 32 wearing my clothing makes me feel very proud and just inspires me to design even more.

“I have always had a passion for retail fashion and started out designing clothes in my bedroom without any money.

“Friends said the logo would look really good on clothes, and I took it from there.”

The shop opened in October last year.

And Mr Nhemachena said he has already been getting orders online from around the world.

He said: “I have ambitions of creating my own fashion culture in West Yorkshire, starting with Wakefield and slowly expanding it.

“I never thought it would take off like this at all, but I’ve had about 100,000 hits on the website in the last six months.

“I’ve now managed to get the brand into other stores in Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Doncaster and Barnsley.”

Wretch 32 released his debut album ‘Black And White’ in August 2011.

In the same month, the rapper scored a number one single with his track ‘Don’t Go’, featuring Josh Kumra.
