Motorway chaos as lorry carrying hay catches fire

A LORRY carrying hay on the southbound stretch of the M1 near Wakefield caused traffic chaos yesterday evening (Friday) after it caught fire.

Firefighters were called to the incident, between junctions 40 and 41, at 4.36pm after reports that the heavy good vehicle was alight.

Appliances from Ossett, Wakefield, Castleford, Morley, Rothwell, Hunslet and the hose laying module for water relay from Mirfield tackled the blaze and it took firefighters using breathing apparatus some time to put it out.

The southbound carriageway of the M1 was closed between the two junctions for several hours causing severe tailbacks and delays to those trying to get away for the bank holiday weekend.
