Musical society returns to its roots
A MUSICAL group founded in Normanton more than 80 years ago is bringing this year's show back home.
The Five Towns Musical Society, formerly known as the Normanton Amateur Operatic Society, will perform at the Alice Bacon Centre on Market Street in July – for the first time in six years.
Financial reasons meant the society had been performing at Castleford Civic Centre.
President John Kappes has been a member of the society since 1951.
He said: “The Alice Bacon Centre has some great facilities now so we are very much looking forward to performing there.
“People in Normanton have been wanting us to come back so we are hoping they will come along and support us. We also hope that a few of the friends we have made within the Five Towns will come to the show.”
The society was formed in 1925 when two Normanton church theatre groups merged.
For their homecoming show they will be staging the classic western musical Calamity Jane, which will star long-term cast member Pippa Slater in the title role.
She first performed when she joined the company in 1987.
Calamity Jane will be on at the Alice Bacon Centre from July 8 to 11. Tickets are 7.50 and 6.50 with concessions.
