National Express stops operating services to Westgate
TRANSPORT firm National Express will no longer operate trains running through Wakefield Westgate after losing its government rail franchise.
The East Coast main line will be taken back into public ownership after the firm, which lost 20m on the route in the first half of this year, failed to renegotiate its contract.
National Express won the franchise from GNER in 2007 but made losses on the route, which suffered from slumping passenger numbers.
The government will taken control of the line after saying it was not prepared to bail the firm out.
Transport secretary Lord Adonis said tickets would be honoured and services would not be affected.
