Netherton Gala Is Back For Good

NETHERTON Gala is back for good after more than 600 people braved the rain for first event in five years.

Families joined in the resurrected tradition – which began at the end of the Second World War but dissapeared in 2004 – was held at Netherton School playing field, on Netherton Lane.

It was opened with a tractor procession and a majorette display by the Phoenix All Stars.

Organiser Lisa Newton said: "We had a really good turnout for our first year. Considering it was raining in the morning that was brilliant.

"The highlight of the day was the Pocket Panto show in Netherton Sports and Social club, there were so many people packed in to see them. They were really good."

And it was a tense final between the village mums and the village dads, in the tug of war, but the ladies triumphed.

Mrs Newton, 29, of Upper Lane, said: "We really want to thank Sitlington Round Table who did all the marshalling and the food.

"If it were not for the 500 grant from Sitlington Parish Council we wouldn't have been able to hold the event.

"But we made a profit this year so the gala is definitely here to stay. We've already started to plan for next year and we want to make it a really traditional village gala."

Programme number 81 won the first prize of 50 and number 25 won second prize – two tickets to a Wakefield Wildcats match.
