New addition to jumbulance fleet

A CHARITY which provides a vital lifeline for disabled, sick and elderly people has been celebrating the latest addition to its fleet.

The West Yorkshire Jumbulance group took their brand new 40,000 bus to St Thomas a Becket School to show to pupils past and present.

Five former pupils from the school now volunteer as carers who help people out when travelling on the jumbulance, which is a specially adapted vehicle kitted out with five beds, reclining seats, medical equipment and a kitchen.

Angela Kennedy, group organiser, said: “You and I could get about by any mode of transport but for people who travel on the Jumbulance, some of them couldn’t travel any other way – they need the facilities that it offers.

“It’s particularly of benefit to the elderly because they may have lost a partner or don’t have the ability to travel independently.”

The jumbulance can be hired by anyone and is very popular with care homes who want to take their residents out for a jaunt.

Mrs Kennedy said: “The carers work very hard but some are not as fit as they used to be that is why young people are invaluable to us.”
