A FAST food chain will be serving burgers around the clock on a permanent basis, creating ten new jobs.
McDonald’s on Dewsbury Road has been granted planning permission to operate 24 hours a day.
It had previously been allowed to operate during all hours, but only on a 12-month trial period.
Now Wakefield Council has allowed the company to make the non-stop operating hours permanent.
Wakefield MP Mary Creagh slammed the decision to allow the restaurant to extend its opening hours last year as the city was found to have a higher than average obesity rate.
She described the move as “opposite of everything that is good for us - freshly cooked food eaten round a table.”
And residents objected over fears of anti-social behaviour and extra litter at the site, which is directly opposite a sheltered housing scheme for the elderly.
But McDonald’s franchisee Anne Wainwright said the trial period had proved a success and she had received no further complaints.
She added: “I’m pleased my application to trade 24/7 at my Dewsbury Road restaurant has been made permanent.
“The temporary change in hours proved popular with my customers. The change in hours will also mean I am able to create up to 10 new jobs at the restaurant.
“As I’ve said previously I do also recognise that opening for longer places more responsibility on my team and I to ensure we operate the business in a way that does not impact our neighbours and so will continue to work with the local authorities to address any concerns and maintain our litter management plans.”
The restaurant will trade through a drive-thru’ system between midnight and 5am.
