New nightclub in former curry house on Westgate gets knocked back

PLANS to open a new nightclub in the city centre have been rejected.
The owners of Boomerangs and Mex Bar were looking to run a third premises from the former Mumbai Curry restaurant building on Westgate.
But Kevin Spencer, owner of M&S Leisure, has been refused planning permission from Wakefield Council to turn it into a commercial nightclub.
In a decision notice, the council said it would be detrimental as the building would be unused during the day and it would add to crime and disorder in the city.
If given the go-ahead, it would have been called Tequila Nightclub, a brand which already exists in Bradford.
Mr Spencer, who previously ran Reflex and Flares, said he would be appealing the decision.
He said: “I was very disappointed by the outcome and the reason for the decision.
“The building was previously closed during the day when it was a restaurant and we already run a successful Tequila nightclub in Bradford, where we have no complaints over crime or disorder.
“We are appealing it and will hope to still open in time for Christmas.”
The club would have opened from 10pm until 4am, employed up to 15 staff, and provided commercial, party and chart music on the ground floor, while the first floor would be dedicated to commercial R&B music.
Wakefield Civic Society had objected to the plans for the Grade Two listed Georgian town-house due to its “inactive frontage during the daytime and it will further expand the ‘dead zone’ along this part of Westgate”.
The historic building is within the Upper Westgate Conservation Area and was previously Jinnah Indian restaurant, which closed this year.
