New shops are opening and cafés changing hands as part of several changes to Ossett town centre.

Moons Rock Shop will sell musical instruments, sound equipment, band merchandise and music from the former Manhattan Bar site in the town hall basement.

The bar closed in 2009.

Moons owner Daz Trei said he was encouraged to start his own business because of difficulties finding a job.

He said: “This is going to be a rock emporium and there’s nothing like it in the area. Many musicians have to go to Leeds and even there the shops aren’t specific to their genre.

“This will have something for everyone, for music fans as well as musicians.”

Mr Trei said he was looking for help with funding, because local agencies set up to help small businesses had turned him down.

He said: “The costs have built up we could do with some help. I feel these agencies just don’t understand what we’re trying to do with this.”

Planning permission has also been granted for two shop units on Towngate, next to the William Hill shop.

But developers told the Express that Ladbrokes had expressed an interest in using both units and they had applied for fresh planning permission that would allow the bookmakers to open.

Lucy’s Café, at the Wellgate Centre, will be refurbished this spring under new owner Terry Lennon.

Mr Lennon, who lives in Ossett, said he had sourced nearly everything he needed for the café, including cashier tills and signs, from businesses within the town.

He said: “I want this café to be made by local people, for local people.

“The more I looked at keeping it local the more I realised I could really make this part of the culture of the business.”

Mr Lennon said the refurb would take about 10 to 12 weeks and that the café’s upstairs room would be able to be used by community and school groups.
