Crofton Academy and Wakefield College have teamed up to create a new £1m sixth form centre, due to open next year.
It will be built in the grounds of the High Street school and offer a range of post-16 opportunities from taster courses in subjects such as business and sport, to A-levels in biology, maths and English, as well as BTEC extended diplomas in subjects including computer game design.
The centre will initially cater for 150 students from across the district, but there are plans to expand it in the future.
Wakefield College principal Sam Wright said it will build on the strengths of both organisations.
She added: “It will provide a career-focused educational offer, giving young people the chance to continue with the next stage of their education locally, before going into employment or onto university.”
The sixth form centre will be staffed by a combination of Wakefield College and Crofton Academy teachers.
Jez Horsley, headteacher of Crofton Academy, said: “Although it will be on the school site, it will have an independent feel. The students won’t have to wear uniform and won’t feel like they are in a school environment. The ethos of it will be that it’s the next level of their education.”
More than 250 people turned out to an open evening about the new centre on Wednesday. It will be built on the site of the existing tennis courts at the school, and include teaching rooms. staff rooms, IT and welfare facilities.
The centre is expected to open in September 2013. For more information on courses, call 01924 789111 or to register your details visit www.wakefield.ac.uk/sixthformat crofton
