No evidence from Revenikiotis
A CITY engineer accused of kidknapping and killing Stephanie Hammill has elected not to give evidence at his trial.
Malcolm Swift QC, who defends Ioannis Revenikiotis, made the announcement to Sheffield Crown Court this afternoon.
Revenikiotis, 29, formerly of School Crescent, Dewsbury, denies the abduction and manslaughter of the travel agent on November 29, 2003.
Trial judge Mr Justice Wilkie asked Mr Swift: "Have you informed him now is the moment he can give evidence but if he fails or chooses not to do so then the jury may draw such inference as they think proper?"
The barrister confirmed he had.
Miss Hammill, 20, was on her way home to Lincoln Street with her fiance James Garland after a night out in Wakefield four years ago.
It is alleged she got into what she thought was a taxi, but it sped off on Balne Lane leaving Mr Garland behind.
Her body was found minutes later in the middle of Batley Road. The prosecution claim she exited Revenikiotis's moving Mercedes after fearing a sexual assault.
She landed in the middle of the carriageway where she was run over by an oncoming taxi and died instantly from multiple injuries.
The case continues tomorrow. See Friday's Express for more on the trial.
