Schools have confirmed that meals are not contaminated with horse meat after a national scandal over the mislabelling for meat products.

And health bosses are waiting for “total assurance” no hospital meals contained traces of horse meat.

Wakefield Council said it had received a written assurance from school meals provider Kingswood Catering over the authenticity of beef meals.

A spokeswoman said: “Dishes such as lasagne are made by trained staff on site and we use meat from local UK farmers.”

Outwood Grange Academy, which is not controlled by the local authority, also issued an assurance, saying: “All suppliers have confirmed this in writing.”

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, which runs Pinderfields, said it had not dealt with any suppliers implicated in the scandal.

A spokesman said: ““We take the quality of meals we provide very seriously and we have asked our suppliers for absolute assurance that there is no trace of horse meat in any produce that is supplied to us.

“So far we have been given this assurance and our investigations will continue until we have total assurance.”

On Tuesday, police and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) raided Peter Boddy Licensed Slaughterhouse in Todmorden.

The FSA said it believed the slaughterhouse supplied horse carcasses to meat processing plant Farmbox Meats Ltd in Aberystwyth, Wales, which was also raided.

The owners of both companies deny any wrongdoing.

Traces of the horse painkiller bute, which is not permitted in meat for human consumption, have also been fond in horse carcasses slaughterered in the UK.

Wakefield MP and shadow environment secretary Mary Creagh said: “We now know that the more tests the retailers are carrying out, the more horse meat they are finding.

“We have been warned by the government to expect more bad news.”
