BUILDINGSwhich are transforming the city skyline have been nominated in this year’s Wakefield Civic Society Design Awards.
The new Sun Lane Leisure centre is just one of the new developments already been put forward as a contender.
Wakefield One – the council’s new civic headquarters and home to the city’s main library and museum – has also been nominated.
And there could also be awards for Jubilee Gardens, the new public garden outside County Hall, the Harrison Building at Wakefield College and the Secret Garden at Thornes Park.
Kevin Trickett, president of the society, said: “One of our aims is to encourage and reward good design.
“As a civic society, we look at planning applications and we are critical when we see something we don’t like but we also want to reward and recognise something that we do like and appreciate.”
Wakefield Civic Society began its Design Awards scheme in 1966 – two years after the society was formed.
Last year’s winners included The Hepworth Wakefield, the medieval Monks’ Refectory at Nostell Business Park and the Rushbond building at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Also highly commended were Trinity Walk shopping centre, Clarence Court and Clarence Gardens, Bliss Boutique on Little Westgate, and Joe’s Diner on The Springs.
This year’s categories include best new development; best refurbishment; best shop front; best public house, cafe bar or restaurant frontage; and best new residential development.
Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Libraries, said: “I am absolutely delighted that three council projects have been recognised in the Wakefield Civic Society prestigious Design Awards.
“The nominations for the state-of-the-art Wakefield One and Sun Lane Leisure buildings, and the scenic Jubilee Gardens, acknowledge these fantastic new developments for the people of Wakefield. If you’ve not yet visited, I would encourage residents to take a look.”
The deadline for nominations is January 18 and the results will be announced in March.
