THE number of people on the dole in the district rose last month - despite a fall in the number of out-of-work claimants nationally.

There were 9,145 people on Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) in Wakefield in December, a rise of 185 on the previous month.

The number of 18-24-year-olds on the dole for a year or more in the district also remained the same at 525.

Nationally, the number of people claiming JSA fell to 12,100 to 1.56m, its lowest level since June 2011.

Overall unemployment fell by 37,000 to 2.49m between September and November, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

But the number of 16-24-year-olds out of work UK-wide rose by 1,000 to 957,000.
