Nurse reprimanded over care of elderly patient at Pinderfields Hospital

A NURSE has been reprimanded for not providing adequate care to a 93-year-old patient at Pinderfields Hospital.

The pensioner was left severely dehydrated as an intravenous drip was not connected after she was admitted to the hospital.

A Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing found that nurse Erica Denton did not ask for help to move the patient’s cannula and did not ensure that other medics were called within a reasonable period of time.

The panel found she failed to provide adequate care.

The unnamed patient had been admitted to hospital suffering with a bowel blockage.

But when her daughter visited three days later she found her mother had not been connected to an intravenous drip to stop her becoming dehydrated.

Her mother died three days after the incident in May 2008.

The NMC hearing in London heard that when speaking to the patient’s daughter on the phone, she described her condition as “fine” even though the obstruction had not been relieved in three days.

Derek Zeitlin, on behalf of the NMC, said Denton had “endless opportunities” to escalate concerns which were raised and in failing to do so, did not provide an adequate standard of care.

Mick Barraclough, representing Denton, said she did not admit this though she accepted she failed to ensure the intravenous cannula was resited.

In their judgement, the panel told Denton: “You did take steps to contact a doctor, but you did not follow this up adequately or in good time.”

They added that: “This was a vulnerable patient in need of intravenous hydration. Ensuring a patient is hydrated is a part of the basic care required of a registered nurse. While you acknowledged that this was a high priority, your actions did not reflect this.”

They said Denton, who no longer works at Pinderfields, had shown remorse and imposed a Caution Order for two years, which will show on the NMC register.
