AN off-duty police officer was involved in a head on collision which left a couple seriously injured, a meeting was told.
Sandra and Kevan Sercombe are still in hospital in a serious condition after the smash on Blacker Lane, Netherton, on Saturday.
They were heading towards the motorway to visit their granddaughter in Leeds when the smash happened just before noon.
Mrs Sercombe, 68, of Netherfield Place, Netherton, was taken to Pinderfields Hospital with a broken spine.
Her husband, aged 72, had to be air lifted to Leeds General Infirmary where x-rays showed he had broken ribs.
He has since been moved to Pinderfields Hospital to be nearer his family.
Mrs Sercombe’s daughter, Vicki Telford, 47, said: “They were going to give my daughter Nancy a present for her 23rd birthday.
“After what happened they won’t go on Blacker Lane again - it’s a death trap.
“My mum is still waiting for a bed on the spinal ward and they are worried in case she might develop pneumonia.
“My step-dad is better than he was but he only has one lung and they are struggling to get his oxygen levels right.”
Earlier this year The Blacker Lane Action Group was set up by residents who have launched a campaign to make the road safer.
A public meeting was held in Netherton on Wednesday night with district councillor Lawrence Kirkpatrick and Insp Richard Clare, of the Rural neighbourhood police team (NPT).
Speaking about the smash on Saturday, Insp Clare said: “It was a resident from Netherton who was an off-duty police officer.
“He was driving up Blacker Lane when it looks like he might have strayed over the white line and then collided head on with another vehicle.
“At the moment there have been no prosecutions and the investigation is still on going.”
In response to the Blacker Lane Action Group’s campaign and pressure from Coun Kirkpatrick, Wakefield Council has pledged to resurface the road, consider re-siting warning signs and also look into putting a new speed limit in place.
