Oil spill sparks pig farm blaze
FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at a pig farm yesterday.
Flames spewed from an agricultural building at Hollingthorpe Hall Farm from about 6.10am where 10 tonnes of plastic and 3,000 litres of cooking oil were stored.
Incident commander Chris Kirby, of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service HQ, said: “The building was well ablaze when we arrived, and crews did a good job of getting it under control quickly to prevent it spreading to other farm buildings nearby.”
He said a farm operative had been mixing pig food with oil, which spilled and somehow caught fire, adding: “No animals or people were injured, and we liaised with the environment agency to ensure there was no risk to the community.”
Crews from Wakefield, Ossett, Dewsbury, Normanton and Barnsley and specialist appliances from Hunslet, Garforth, Mirfield and Batley were all called to the incident.
Firefighters were on the scene until about midday.
Arsonists destroyed the piggery and an adjoining bungalow back in June 2010.
