Ossett School headteacher dances with Zulu warriors

AN African school has a new chief after proud headteacher Martin Shevill unveiled new classrooms built with cash raised by pupils in Ossett.

Mr Shevill returned from Malawi, as a chief, after Ossett School pupils raised thousands of pounds to build a classroom block at Ekwendeni School.

In an emotional opening ceremony, he was thanked by poor and orphaned pupils and local politicians for the facility, built as a result of Ossett School's Warm Heart Malawi appeal.

Mr Shevill danced with Zulu warriors and was presented with a hand-crafted wooden staff, a traditional symbol of his new role as chief of the East African School.

He said: "The welcome we received in Malawi was fantastic. It was a wonderful experience and very moving. It is only when you are out there that you realise how much what we have done means to them."

He visited Ekwendeni with assistant headteacher Matthew Partington, who help set up the appeal.

There was a second honour for Mr Shevill last week when he received a distinction in the Headteacher of the Year category in the North of England Teaching Awards.
