Parade plans support

MUMS and tots are backing plans to celebrate St George's Day for the first time in Horbury.

The town will mark England’s national day of patriotism with a parade and fireworks party on Friday, April 23.

The event has been organised by Coun Alyson Ripley and the Horbury Environmental Action Group.

Mum-of-three Tracy England said: “I think it’s about time that we celebrated St George’s Day. We never seem to do so in this country they way that others do and I think that’s a shame.

“We’re hoping to make the event a real community event where families can come along and enjoy the day for free.”

On the day, St George will lead a parade through the town.

The saint will then make his way to Slazengers Sports and Social Club, on Southfield Lane, Addingford, for a party and fireworks display.

Last month Horbury Environmental Action Group was given 2,162.50 from the Community Chest grants scheme to help cover the costs.

And a local printing firm, Vision On Digital, has donated 600 worth of banners and signs to help promote the party and decorate the town.

The action group was formed last year at the Mums and Tots, based in Horbury Community Centre, on Cluntergate.

Their first project was to organise the annual Christmas lights switch-on event in the town centre.

Mrs England, of Honley Square, said: “We want to raise awareness of Horbury and what goes on here. No other groups in the town seem to organise things so we thought we would.”

People have been asked to walk to the event and leave their cars at home to avoid congestion on Southfield Lane.
