PEOPLE will have to pay more for their police force if a motion to increase the number of officers in West Yorkshire is approved.

Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson said increasing police council tax by 3.8 per cent would pay for 44 new officers.

The proposal, which equates to a penny a day extra for those in council tax bands A and B, and £5 a year for those in band D, will now go before the Police and Crime Panel for approval.

Mr Burns-Williamson said his Listening to You First survey showed 57 per cent of people were willing to pay more for policing.

He said: “A penny a day increase in the precept means the recruitment of 44 police officers that would otherwise be impossible.

“It is really encouraging that people have said they are prepared to pay a little more towards keeping their communities safe and hopefully this rise does not impose too heavy a burden on families in these uncertain economic times.”
