Pensioner killed by reversing bus

A pensioner was killed by a reversing double decker bus as he was on his way to see his wife in hospital, an inquest was told.

Jack Glover, who had hearing problems was knocked down as he changed buses at Leeds bus station.

Mr Glover, 79, of Rothwell was on his way to see his wife, Elsie, who was in hospital having treatment for cancer.

The hearing was told that Mr Glover, a retired Leeds University boiler operator did not walk in to the bus station after getting off the double decker.

He walked between the double decker and a single decker and ended up stood behind the bus he had just got off as it reversed.

The driver started to reverse the double decker with its reversing alarm sounding.

Mr Glover, a father of three, walked behind the reversing bus and was knocked down.

Tests revealed Mr Glover would have died instantly after suffering multiple injuries to his skull, arms and legs.

On the day of the incident, January 8 2008, Mr Glover had been to a clinic at Leeds General Infirmary to pay 2,495 for two new digital hearing aids.

He caught the double decker to the station on York Street and the single-decker bus would have taken him to St James's Hospital to visit wife Elsie.

Mr Glover's son Ian told the hearing his father was a regular bus user who had travelled St James's Hospital every day after his wife was admitted in November 2007.

In a statement read to the court, Samuel Owen, the hearing aid specialist Mr Glover had visited on the day he died, said the pensioner's hearing loss meant he would have found it very hard to hear and make sense of everyday sounds.

Elsie Glover died of cancer two months after the accident.
