Pinderfields Hospital surgeons remove pencil from boy’s hand
Robbie Appleby was sent home from Doncaster Royal Infirmary with a pencil stuck in his hand after they said they didn't have time to deal with it.
A TEENAGER had to travel 20 miles to Wakefield so surgeons could remove a pencil, which had been stuck through his hand for almost two days.
Robbie Appleby-Socket, of Askern, near South Elmsall, had the lodged pencil removed at Pinderfields Hospital and had to stay in for two nights on an antibiotic drip as staff feared it had become infected.
His mother Emma said she was forced to come to Wakefield after being turned away from Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) twice.
She said: “The staff at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield were amazing.
“They couldn’t believe that the pencil had just been left in his hand and neither could I.
“The staff at Doncaster Royal Infirmary just left the pencil in and put a bandage over it and told him he would have to come back. I was worried he would knock it and the pencil would go even further into his hand.
“I was disgusted, he could’ve lost his hand.”
The 13-year-old was taken to the A&E department at DRI after getting the pencil stuck in his hand while playing with friends at his school last Wednesday.
They were told Robbie would need an operation and would have to come back the next morning, so he was sent away with the pencil still embedded in his hand.
But when they arrived the next morning they claim they were told Robbie’s name was not on the list and he would once again have to go home and wait for a phone call to reschedule his surgery.
A spokesman for DRI said: “Unfortunately, due to a number of very urgent cases requiring immediate trauma surgery, Robbie’s operation was postponed. We apologised and gave him further painkillers and antibiotics.
“We apologise to Robbie and his family for the fact we could not operate on him when planned.”
