Poetry gallops into centre stage at Black Horse awards

POETRY is making a comeback in Wakefield, according to Wakefield MP Mary Creagh.

Ms Creagh was on hand to help the Black Horse Poets at their 8th annual awards ceremony, held on Friday in Henry Boon’s.

The evening consisted of awards ceremonies, poetry readings and singer songwriters all plying their trade on stage.

Mary Creagh, MP for Wakefield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton said: “This is a very exciting time for poetry in Wakefield. Black Horse poets celebrate their 10th anniversary this year and the Red Shed readings are really taking off.

“Poetry speaks of our place and our human identity and it is vital that we support groups like Black Horse Poets which make Wakefield special.”

The main winner of the evening was the group’s general secretary, Roger Manns, who scooped the Jane Harrison Memorial Award.

The Rising Star award went to Halima Mayat, and in the competition’s national category mentions go to entrants from Hitchin, Stoke and South Wales.

Black Horse Poets president Louis Kasatkin said: “It was a hugely successful evening of music, wit and performance poetry at its best.”
