Police prove pensioner right over Barnsley Road speeding campaign
Geoff Clayton,83, who lives on Barnsley Road,Wakefield, is so fed up of taking his life into his hands when pulling out of his drive that he has put a 30mph speed sign up outside his house.
A PENSIONER who took the law into his own hands to stop speeding drivers has won the support of the police.
The Express reported in November that Geoff Leighton had made his own 30mph speed sign and put it up right outside his home on Barnsley Road to slow dangerous drivers.
Since then, the 83-year-old has gathered almost 100 signatures on a petition, and is still refusing to take the sign down until he gets something in writing from council enforcement officers.
Mr Leighton has been fighting for a proper sign since 2006, when the speed limit was reduced from 40mph to 30mph.
This week, local neighbourhood police officers carried out speed checks in the area. They issued four speeding tickets to drivers caught doing between 38 and 54 mph, which Mr Leighton welcomed and said it only proves he is right.
PC Ashley Wood said: “This is a highly populated residential area with many dog walkers, children and pedestrians. The 30mph speed limit is set to keep members of the public safe. We take this very seriously and will regularly be enforcing the speed limit in the area. We will be trying our best to improve the issue.”
