Police station flasher jailed

A FLASHER who exposed himself at a police station has been jailed for 26 weeks.

Wakefield Magistrates’ Court heard how Craig Phillips, 33, was due to be released without charge after being detained overnight at Wood Street Police Station for an alleged breach of the peace.

But he ended up being charged with exposure on Mothering Sunday when he pleasured himself in front of a female member of staff.

The court heard how Phillips, of Doncaster Road, Crofton, asked if he could use the toilet, but the woman became suspicious when she did not hear him urinating, and turned to find him touching himself.

Phillips covered up when he was asked to sit down, but asked to go to the toilet again five minutes later.

When she did not hear him come back out, the woman turned to see what was wrong to discover him stood there with his genitals exposed. He then made a lewd comment.

When interviewed about the allegations, Phillips said he remembered going to the toilet, but denied the rest.

He accused the woman of watching him and said he had not been able to relieve himself because ‘she put him off’.

The court heard how Phillips, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was jailed for three months and put on the sex offenders’ register for seven years in August 2007 for a similar offence. He was also jailed in January 2006 for a sexual touching offence.

But Martyn Lord mitigating, said Phillips had “kept himself out of trouble since then,” and that mental health issues would explain the latest ‘bizarre’ offence.

Sentencing Phillips to 26 weeks in prison, magistrate Jan Hudson, said: “We regard this offence as despicable because this lady was trying to help you and look after you and she should not have been subjected to this.”

He was also put on the sex offenders’ register for seven years.
